Welcome and introduction – Professor Martin Gill

10:55  Rural Crime & Security: Issues and remedies
Dr. Matt Bowden, Technological University, Dublin

Rural crime has emerged as one of the most challenging issues facing communities. The fact that there are valuable goods, in isolated places, which are difficult to protect and where police presence is low makes them ideal targets for criminals. Reflecting on recent studies, Dr Bowden asks what can rural dwellers do and what is the role of the security sector?

11:35  Security in the new digital age: Helping us or helping offenders?
Dr. Janice Goldstraw-White, Perpetuity Research and Consultancy

Has the increase in technology helped security professionals better achieve their goals, or disproportionately created another set of security risks to address? The Internet of Things (IoT) is one much discussed example but what about AI and ChatGPT? Just how should security professionals assess the risks? How can we harness the best to the security advantage and mitigate the worst to thwart offenders?

12:05   Physical security: Is it time to abandon traditional methods to future proof security solutions
Alan Durnan, Director – Strategic Development, Bidvest Noonan

The Security guarding sector in Ireland is facing challenges not encountered since pre-regulation. Minimum pay increases in the sector are being delayed against the backdrop of close to full employment nationally. The difficulties encountered in attracting and retaining talent are impacting on the viability of physical security programmes for organisations big and small. How is the industry responding to these challenges? What is the medium to long-term impact? What steps should organisations consider to future proof their physical security programmes?
